A play on the semicircular wave-like patterns of the Japanese seigaiha "青海波" (Kanji), this handblock printed handwoven Tussar silk saree is a study in contrasting tones and geometric balance, with the ridges of each wave stylised with different patterns as one would find in the ocean itself — printed in black on a bright cobalt body with alternating stripes of undyed tussar with a ghicha palla, as though the twinkling depths of the sea beyond the sandy shoreline, this saree traces the history of this multicultural motif whose origins are said to have been in the Persian Sasanian Empire.
