The Art of Leheriya
Leheriya, a timeless fabric dyeing tradition from Rajasthan, draws its name from the word "लहर" ("leher")—meaning wave—beautifully capturing the fluid, rippling patterns found in this style. The technique, extensive and meticulous, involves carefully tying the fabric before dyeing it to create its signature wave-like stripes.
Traditionally, natural dyes sourced from indigo, turmeric, and madder were used, offering earthy hues that mirrored Rajasthan’s landscape. While some artisans still follow this practice, today, brighter, longer-lasting synthetic dyes are often employed, especially on fabrics like tussar silk, known for its lustrous texture and durability.
The Leheriya dyeing process is as intricate as it is captivating. Each saree is hand-tied in precise patterns, dyed in vibrant colours, and wrung out after each step to ensure the waves flow seamlessly across the fabric. Once dyed, the sarees are then carefully air-dried under Rajasthan’s scorching desert sun, allowing the colours to deepen naturally. This method, passed down through generations, guarantees that no two Leheriya sarees are ever the same. Whether it’s deep cobalt blue, sunburst yellow, or rich red, each colour holds cultural significance and reflects the vibrant spirit of Rajasthan.
Sejal, our Leheriya collection, is hand-dyed by skilled artisans in Rajasthan on handwoven tussar silk that enhances the fluidity of the design by lending it both weight and elegance. With each piece, you are not only wearing a saree but a fragment of history—a vibrant wave of colour that’s unique in every fold.
Leheriya remains a symbol of Rajasthan’s rich heritage, offering an unmistakable blend of tradition and elegance that endures in modern wardrobes.
